The stator generates a stationary magnetic field.This stationary magnetic field surrounds the armature, or rotor. The external power source excites the armature magnetic field. This produces a rotating magnetic field attracted to the stator's stationary magnetic field. A battery (or DC power supply) provides a constant DC voltage. The voltage amplitude determines the speed of the motor, so the battery or DC power supply is a linear excitation source. Pulse width modulation (PWM) is the most effective way to change the speed of brushless DC motor. PWM technology is a constant voltage source with fixed frequency switch. The speed of motor can be adjusted by changing the pulse width of PWM signal. The ratio between high and low pulse levels is called PWM signal duty ratio. The amplitude of the DC battery level is equal to the average amplitude of the PWM signal.
